Only Through Time

Ideas in Education

The art is greatest which conveys to the mind of the spectator, by any means whatsoever, the greatest number of the greatest ideas; and I call an idea great in proportion as it is received by a higher faculty of the mind, and as it more fully occupies, and in occupying, exercises and exalts, the faculty by which it is received.

If this, then, be the definition of great art, that of a great artist naturally follows. He is the greatest artist who has embodied, in the sum of his works, the greatest number of the greatest ideas.

Put this together with Charlotte Mason’s statement that the mind feeds on ideas (and is thereby educated) and you may conclude that great art is the best tool of educating the mind.

Good Work Update

It’s getting close to midnight and all you Good Work subscribers are doubtless wondering whether your date has stood you up. The truth is he’s been unavoidably delayed, but he’ll be there soon. Here’s proof:

My friend (and design superhero) Ryan Harrison has been rolling through his own client work and had to step back from this issue, which gave me the opportunity to try my own hand at zine design. When you get your copy, you’ll notice it has a somewhat… rougher aesthetic, like it was done with tape and a cheap scanner.

*cough, cough*

Actually I’m pleased with the result. It fits very comfortably in the charmingly chaotic world of zines. I’ll think you’ll enjoy it.

Smart Poison

There are a lot of reasons to say no when your pre-teen asks for a smartphone. One of the most obvious reasons is that smartphones give you unfiltered and unlimited access to entertainment, which isn’t a good thing for anyone, least of all teenagers. It’s like carrying around a TV and video game console in your pocket. (I mean, that’s exactly what it is.)

Almost more detrimental than constant entertainment is social media. (I’d throw texting in there, too.) Jean Twenge has been studying teen mental health for ten years now and documented some disturbing trends in her book iGen. Her hypothesis was that the spike in teenage depression was caused by smartphones and social media. Not everyone was convinced, and a lot of other explanations were proposed. In this recent newsletter, Twenge looks at thirteen alternative explanations for “the high levels of distress among teens,” including the economy, COVID, school shootings, and climate change. It should come as no surprise that she has good reasons for dismissing all of them.

Worthy of Individual Names

Hilaire Belloc describes the delightful disorder of an English seaside town in Hills and the Sea:

It is not only that the separate things in such towns are delightful, nor only that one comes upon them suddenly, but also that these separate things are so many. They have characters as men have. There is nothing of that repetition which must accompany the love of order and the presence of strong laws. The similar insistent forms which go with a strong civilisation, as they give it majesty, so they give it also gloom, and a heavy feeling of finality: these are quite lacking here in England, where the poor have for so long submitted to the domination of the rich, and the rich have dreaded and refused a central government. Everything that goes with the power of individuals has added peculiarity and meaning to all the stones of Lynn. Moreover, a quality whose absence all men now deplore was once higher in England than anywhere else, save, perhaps, in the northern Italian hills. I mean ownership, and what comes from ownership—the love of home.

A “strong civilisation,” as he says, needs order and strong laws. Both of these cause everything to look pretty much the same (towns, roads, cars). England, though I’m sure Belloc would call it a “strong civilisation,” resisted that standardization and so its small towns have preserved their unique character. (He goes on to say that “All the roofs of Lynn and all its pavements are worthy (as though they were living beings) of individual names.”

It’s extremely interesting that he immediately connects this with ownership and, almost instantly, the love of home. If we follow his reasoning, it seems to go like this: ownership –> love of home –> resistance to central government –> resistance to standardization –> places with peculiarity and meaning. (I’m sure Belloc develops these ideas more fully in other books.)

I’ll make one more comment. Even more than the English, Americans dreaded and refused a central government. We’ve pushed against it since our country’s inception. Yet, standardization has crept over all our cities, towns, and villages. Driving down the highway is like riding a carousel: you pass the same glittering objects again and again (Shell stations, Starbucks, Cracker Barrels). Our central government has more sway than we like to believe. But I wonder if the American form of standardization has more to do with mass media. I’ll leave it there for now.

Engineering and Liberal Arts

— Everyone gets a double major: engineering and history. That’s it. That’s all we offer. There are some required history survey courses that you take in a sequence, and then a bunch of electives. The capstone is probably a history of technology course, but it comes after and in addition to the macro- and micro-histories you’ve been studying all along. You wouldn’t have to do a bunch of integrated “context and ethics” in a technology course if you just said: Everybody studies these two things, period. There’s no complementary “rounding out” in some vague hand-wavey form. You just don’t get prepared unless you have history, full stop.

— Everyone does a 2 + 1 + 2. Instead of students cycling out from liberal arts colleges to engineering programs for a year, it’s the opposite: You come to engineering school, spin out for a deep immersion in a liberal arts environment, maybe one that also serves as your study abroad, then come back and finish.

— Everyone gets an engineering degree, but the other requirement is a Cultural Life Program, such as the one at Furman. Over four years you attend lectures, concerts, and museum exhibitions, a lot of which are your choosing, but they add up to something like 60 hours of cultural education and a required thesis course.
